12 Nov Oracle DBA Tutorial on Database Startup
It means the database is opened and ready for use after it is created. Once the operating system or the database is shut down, it should be started before it can be accessed. The Database Administrator has to perform the following steps to make sure the instance and the database startup each time when the system starts up.
On every system manual startup is accomplished either via supplied scripts or through the SVRMGR or SQLPLUS program. To startup a database using SVRMGR and SQLPLUS, use the following procedure.
The Startup command:
STARTUP [RESTRICTED] [FORCE] [PFILE=file_name]
[EXCLUSIVE or PARALLEL]
[MOUNT or OPEN] db_name
* STARTUP OPEN db_name PFILE=file_name
This above command starts the instance, and opens the database, whose name is db_name using the parameter file specified by the filename following the PFILE= clause. It starts up the database in the default and EXCLUSIVE mode.
* STARTUP RESTRICT OPEN db_name PFILE=file_name
It starts the instance, opens the database named db_name using the parameter file specified by the file_name with following the PFILE= clause. It starts up the database in the restricted mode only. Here the users with only RESTRICTED SESSION permision can log in.
* STARTUP NOMOUNT
The above command starts the instance. But it leaves the database dismounted and closed. It cannot be used with EXCLUSIVE, MOUNT, or OPEN. This is used only when creating database.
* STARTUP OPEN db_name PARALLEL
It starts the instance, opens the database and puts the database in PARALLEL mode for multi-instance use in previous versions of Oracle8.
STARTUP OPEN db_name EXCLUSIVE
Same funtion as mentioned above. But it cannot be specified if PARALLEL or NOMOUNT is also specified.
